See, there’s only one thing I require from a comedy: That it makes me laugh. And GIRLS TRIP did indeed make me laugh. Trust me, it’s one hell of a funny movie. My wife Patricia bought me the Blu-Ray and handed it to me saying; “You need to see this.” And she was right. It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. But it worked for me on another level. I got an insight into the friendship of black women that I wouldn’t normally have seen. And I really enjoyed seeing that friendship.
The “Flossy Posse” are four college friends who have lost touch due to family and career considerations. Lifestyle guru Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall) suggests they all reconnect at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. Sasha (Queen Latifah) is down for this as she’s a struggling internet journalist who need hot gossip to keep her website hot. Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith) used to the be wildest of the crew but she is now a homebody with two kids. Dina (Tiffany Haddish) is a party animal to the 10th Degree.
The Flossy Posse have a series of adventures that are both life changing and wildly hilarious during the reconnection in the Essence Music Festival. Ryan reveals to her friends that her husband (Mike Colter) is a serial cheater but they maintain their marriage because it’s financial beneficial for the both of them. Dina has been fired from her job. As I said earlier, Sasha’s website needs hot gossip to generate income. Lisa needs love. Her girls maintain that just needs to get laid.
GIRLS TRIP is the kind of movie you just have to sit back and Go With It. It’s Fun and has no intention than to entertain. Queen Latifah has long ago proven her talent in drama and comedy and she’s the anchor of the movie along with Regina Hall. I’ve never been much of a fan of Jada Pinkett Smith but she had my sides hurting in this movie. And I’m sure that by now you know Tiffany Haddish stole this movie with the ruthlessness of a Kansas City pimp. There are not words enough for how funny she is in this movie. And she is an amazing storyteller. Don’t believe me? Check out this story she tells about her day hanging out with Jada and Will Smith.
But let’s get back to GIRLS TRIP. If you haven’t seen it then you are depriving yourself of one of the funniest movies of the year. Trust me. It’s THAT funny. And I appreciated the insight into the friendship of black women. It’s a world I don’t get to see and it was fun to see.
Larenz Tate has a major supporting role and there’s a plethora of cameo appearances by Carla Hall, Iyanala Vanzant, Ne-Yo, Doug E. Fresh, Mariah Carey, Faith Evans and that’s not even half of the cameos.
So should you see GIRLS TRIP? Absolutely. You want to laugh and have a good time? Then you need to watch GIRLS TRIP.
